This workshop will introduce first graders to the basic elements of theatrical performance. Each week we will read a picture book together, and use the story to explore an element of drama: silent pantomime, sound effects, group performance, puppetry and more. By the last session, the group will aim to create an original story and act it out.

If your child loves mythological creatures, fantastical beasts or creepy monsters they will really enjoy this workshop! Students will learn about different creatures and their lore, then use that inspiration to create their own characters. This class will have printmaking, illustration, sculpture and even creative role playing activities.

Students will work both individually and  in teams to make vehicles of all kinds powered by wind, motors, and gravity, while receiving an introduction to the different physical forces of our world. Each week, the students will listen to a delightful story specifically chosen to entertain and engage the first grader students.  The story will be followed up with a question of the day that allows the students to share their thoughts and make connections to the story.  After the discussion, there will be a connected activity – ranging from crafts, to STEM projects and more. This workshop will inspire a love of reading, and encourage imagination and creativity.

Watch amazing magic up close and then learn how to do it! Ken is an award-winning magician who loves to teach students magic! Tricks that students will learn include: how to make rubber bands jump around on your fingers, have paperclips leap into the air and link together, push a coin through a table, change the color of handkerchiefs, plus all sorts of fun with cards &emdash; and more. Students will receive their own supplies so that they will be able to practice at home and ‘wow’ their friends and family.

Environmental Explorers is a workshop that connects students to nature right in “our own backyard”. Each week, students will investigate how plants and animals adapt to spring while building science practices and naturalist skills. Lessons will bring students outside to explore their local environment! There is also be opportunities to meet some of Mass Audubon’s native wildlife ambassadors (live animals). Come explore and learn more about the natural world. This workshop is open to new and returning students.

In this workshop, students will be introduced to and explore different ways of measuring using various tools including rulers, cups and teaspoons, graduated cylinders, scales, etc. Students will use their new skills to create original projects each week.

Students will create pieces reflecting use of line, shape, form, color and space while practicing mindfulness and channeling their emotions into their art. Martial Arts is a great way to give kids a headstart in life. Students will learn the positive benefits of self-discipline and confidence, develop coordination, and increase strength and flexibility. This workshop is taught in a fun, energetic and disciplined style by Renshi Craig a Master 5th Degree Black Belt and the owner of Craig’s Kempo Karate Academy and his instructors.
