In this workshop, students will go beyond using paper and pencil and flex their sculpture and architectural skills using many different materials. Students will enjoy giant origami, paper mache, creating lego sculptures and more! Can we build it, yes we can!

Get ready, 3rd graders-its robotics time! This workshop will provide an introduction to block based coding that will be used to control GoPiGo robots (no previous coding experience necessary!). Students will work collaboratively in small groups to customize, code and guide their robots through different challenges. In addition, students will be given time to experiment on their robots to program it to perform a motion or task of their choosing.

Each week, the students will listen to a delightful story specifically chosen to entertain and engage the first grader students.  The story will be followed up with a question of the day that allows the students to share their thoughts and make connections to the story.  After the discussion, there will be a connected activity – ranging from crafts, to STEM projects and more. Watch amazing magic up close and then learn how to do it! Ken is an award-winning magician who loves to teach students magic! Tricks that students will learn include: how to make rubber bands jump around on your fingers, have paperclips leap into the air and link together, push a coin through a table, change the color of handkerchiefs, plus all sorts of fun with cards & dice; and more. Say “hello, world” to coding with this fun introduction to the language of computers. Using Scratch Jr., an online block-based code platform, students will explore how computers process information by putting together code to complete different tasks and challenges each week.

In this workshop, students will learn to sing simple but beautiful songs by folk singers like Woody Guthrie and Elizabeth Mitchell. We will begin by listening to songs and then learn them together by ear. Students will practice the foundational musical skills of rhythm and harmony and have lots of fun along the way!

Environmental Explorers is a workshop that connects students to nature right in “our own backyard”. Each week, students will dig into a new topics while building science practices and naturalist skills. When possible, lessons will bring students outside and use whatever environment is readily available. There is also be opportunities to meet some of Mass Audubon’s native wildlife ambassadors (live animals). Come explore and learn more about the natural world. This workshop is open to new and returning students.

Over ten weeks, students will work together to learn and perform a short play based on the book The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. BEATS is a collaborative music class rooted in creativity and fun! The class focuses on various approaches to music, rhythm, acting and performance. Students will learn more about the processes of writing songs and raps, acting in scenes of musicals and plays, and they will even play instruments in collaboration with others. In this class, students will work on musical skills connected to rhythm, movement, vocal expression and language. Students will begin experimenting with words, rhymes, rhythmic expressions, tongue twisters and poems. They will also learn to play collaborative musical patterns. Begin your home gallery collection with a beautiful painting! Students will use each element of art and build experience creating each layer of an original composition. Martial Arts is a great way to give kids a head start in life. Students will learn the positive benefits of self-discipline and confidence, develop coordination, and increase strength and flexibility. This workshop is taught in a fun, energetic and disciplined style by Renshi Craig a Master 5th Degree Black Belt and the owner of Craig’s Kempo Karate Academy and his instructors. Each week, students will listen to a story, identify and discuss the problem that the characters are having, and use the engineering process (plan, build, test and improve) to construct a solution. An example would be reading the story Three Little Pigs and using the supplied materials to create a house that could withstand wind pressure. This workshop is an introduction to the art and joy of Improv for students in first and second grades. We will begin by playing simple drama games and move on to more complex games as students grow in their ability to work together, listen to each other, and make up ideas on the fly.
