During each day of this classic theater workshop, we’ll play a series of improvisation-based games designed around a theme, such as coming up with creative characters, thinking on your feet, or brainstorming a story as a team. Students will play fun games while also developing leadership skills and teamwork – all in a space where it is safe to get silly!

Each week students will explore and create a wonderful project to bring home. This workshop is open to new and returning students.

Young musicians who have already taken a ukulele workshop at BASEC are invited to dust off their instruments for this Level 2 ukulele class! In this special 30-minute workshop, we’ll move beyond learning basic chords and instead spend more time preparing songs for performance. Interested students who have never taken ukulele at BASEC, but take lessons or play at home, should email ellen.mcellin@belmontbasec.org to make sure this is the right workshop for them.

Our mixed grades sports workshop will play some of the favorites as well as new games. Games will be tailored for our younger players to build confidence and coordination while playing alongside 2nd and 3rd graders. Older students will get the opportunity to lead, mentor, and pick up new skills while learning to collaborate across ages.

Watch amazing magic up close and then learn how to do it! Ken is an award-winning magician who loves to teach students magic! Begin your home gallery collection with a beautiful painting. Students will choose a focus for their art and build experience creating each layer of a successful composition: from background, to decorative embellishment, and finally to rendering their subject in different styles and mediums. Each creation is sure to be a masterpiece!

Environmental Explorers is a workshop that connects students to nature right in “our own backyard”. Each week, students will dig into a new topics while building science practices and naturalist skills. When possible, lessons will bring students outside and use whatever environment is readily available. There will also be opportunities to meet some of Mass Audubon’s native wildlife ambassadors (live animals). Come explore and learn more about the natural world. This workshop is open to new and returning students.

This workshop will introduce and extend students’ knowledge of fundamental tools that they’ll use throughout their life. Using tools like handheld screwdrivers, sewing needles, and rulers, students will create personal marble runs, stuffed animals, action figures, and more! Students will not only get to take home their handmade toys, but also their new knowledge of tolls and how different toys are put together. The best way to learn is through play, so why not learn how to use different tools while making things to play with?

Butterflies, Beetles and Bumblebees, oh my! If your kiddo loves all things bug related, this is the class for them! Students will be making their own artful creations inspired by beautiful bugs; from playing with the symmetry of butterfly wings and designing our own tiny terrariums, to sculpting our own arachnids and imagining new insect adaptations, our elementary entomologists will be sure to have the best time buggin’ out in art!

Join us for hands-on sessions where kids learn a mix of classic card and dice games like Yahtzee, Rummy, 10,000, and other hidden favorites. These are perfect for quick, on-the-go play with 2-4 players-easy rules, no big setups, just a deck of cards or some dice. We will focus on games they can quickly master and keep playing forever, whether with siblings, friends, or even you!

In this advanced theatre workshop, students will experience the whole process of putting on a play” reading the script, choosing the roles, creating costumes and sets, and rehearsing for a staged performance! This year, we’re adapting the first chapter of “The Hobbit” as a short play. Students will have fun dressing as wizards, hobbits, and dwarves, and making a big mess…for the sake of art, of course.

Martial Arts is a great way to give kids a headstart in life. Students will learn the positive benefits of self-discipline and confidence, develop coordination, and increase strength and flexibility. This workshop is taught in a fun, energetic and disciplined style by Renshi Craig a Master 5th Degree Black Belt and the owner of Craig’s Kempo Karate Academy and his instructors. Say “hello, world” to coding with this fun introduction to the language of computers. Using Scratch, an online block-based code platform, students will explore how computers process information by putting together code to complete different tasks and challenges each week. The class will work together to give eachother ideas and feedback, with students working towards the goal of coding their own playable computer game by the end of the workshop session.
