STEM with Kaitlyn (K-8) *Session 4

in: Backyard on: Session 4
meets: Twice a week, week of 08/31
time: 9:30-12:00

Choose between backyard engineering challenges or renewable energy exploration.

Curriculum Option #1: Engineering Challenges

Everyone loves a friendly competition! In this class, we will be completing outdoor competitions based on classic STEM projects — an egg drop and boat building.

For the first day, students will be building individual contraptions to prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from somewhere high up. After building one structure, testing it, and reflecting upon what was successful and what was not, everyone will be given the chance to redesign their structures and try again.

For the second day, each student will be building their own boat out of various materials. We will be testing the boats to see whose can make it from one end of a container to the other, whose boat is the quickest, whose can hold the most weight, and more.

Curriculum Option #2: Renewable Energy Exploration

Do you want to learn about renewable energy? Build your own wind turbines, hydroelectric mills, and solar powered ovens? This is the workshop for you!

Over the course of a week,  we will create projects that highlight different forms of renewable energy:

  1. Each student will be able to make a solar powered oven and see how hot it becomes on the inside and how quickly a marshmallow will melt.
  2. We will also be making individual water mills to test the effectiveness of hydroelectric power. Each student will be able to build their own version of a water mill, test it, and improve it.

$500 – Small Group (1-5 students)
